1st September:
After a break long enough for Baller and Ginno to have contemplated running 3, we come on to the details of the last game of the 2001 season against Collingbourne.
We won't go into the details of why we went to Collingbourne with 10 players, although the phrases 'German girlfriend', 'shaggathon', 'Somerset', 'Lord's' & 'Cup final' are all relevant.
Collingbourne, who needed 13 points to be crowned champions, won the toss and at 22 for 2 were in a certain amount of trouble, however the 2 new batsmen were Indian professional Ghaes Khan & ex Warwickshire professional Tom Edmunds. After a few false strokes, they put on 204 for the third wicket. We didn't exactly cover ourselves in glory with the bat, although our innings was marked by a Bathford best of 63 n.o. by Rich Bean

Champagne moment winner was the small hole half way up the sightscreen, resulting from he ball passing straight through it, via the bowling of Darrel and bat of G. Khan, during the latters century.

25th August:
It would be fair to say that the first XI were stuffed out of sight by Dauntsey. Given first use of the ball on a hard, bouncy track we bowled an incredible selection of '4 balls', and allowed Dauntsey to reach 246 for 4.
We were not aided by some fielding, which with the exception of Baller's catch at cover and Sal's stumping, both off Mezzer, was fairly sub-standard. At one time it looked as if the total might reach 300, but fortunately Baller was taken off at this point, allowing Darrel to reduce the scoring rate by bowling several overs of legside wides.
The task with the bat always looked beyond us, unless they bowled as badly as we had. Needless to say they didn't and we slipped behind the required scoring rate, despite another 50 for Baller and useful contribution from the skipper, before Darrel, Carlos, Salim and Adam F all departed for rapid ducks as soon as the bar had opened.
Champagne moment winner was a 1st team debut of 2 n.o. by Joe Vowles.
18th August:
It was wet, it was miserable, it rained, it was grey, it was horrible, you began to consider taking up golf, it was all deeply depressing, you came to understand why cricketers are often suicidal.
It was that bad.
11th August: Bathford's first XI dobfeated
Bathford first XI crumbled with the bat in face of the relentless attack of the Wanborough trundlers. On a 'May' pitch which was slow, lush and emerald, Bathford failed to make best use of the new ball, bowling too many 4 balls, and allowed Wanborough to reach 147 for 7. Wanborough were also aided by some poor catching, with Jacko, Ollie and Darrel all culprits.
Galer opened the batting, due to Jacko's groin strain, and started like a train, but after he was out the run rate declined as we were 'strangled' by tight bowling, with both Vowler and Baller playing long innings for relatively few runs. As the run rate rose the introduction of Wanborough great D. Obber, who had skittled us at Wanborough, led to a slow collapse and we eventually subsided to 127 all out, with A. Thompson taking 7 for 39.
The champagne moment was closely contested, with the joint winners being Baller for captaincy reminiscent of Steve Self and Vowler for late arrival.
Performance of the day was probably Tank, Ruski, Northey and Don for their supremely 'tuneful' version of 'Mustang Sally'.

4th August: Bathford's first XI had a frustrating afternoon at Urchfont where the game started in favourable conditions, on a good pitch, but the weather rapidly closed in as predicted by the weather forecast.
Urchfont had won the toss and batted, and in the face of some hostile fast bowling from Martin Gale had progressed to 70 for 4 when the game was finally abandoned after several rain breaks.

* Another new entrant to Bathford CC's myths and legends
After last weeks home win against Moredon, a fairly relaxed Northey, following his Bathford best of 96, and the skipper started to walk to their respective homes on the other side of Bath.
On arriving in the middle of Bath, our hero's decided to have a chat with talkative former Bathford and Avonvale player, Kenny Lycett who was working in the cellar bar at the Huntsman, which co-incidently happened to have a late licence until 2 am.
Details from here on are a little hazy, but unfortunately at some point Northey's bag was stolen, rifled through and discarded. The thief was obviously a person with a keen fashion sense, because he left most of the kit behind, but run off with Northey's pencil case, and even more importantly the club address book.
So, if you are in Bath and you see someone wearing cricket gloves, jock strap & thigh pad, carrying a see-through pencil case and an address book featuring pictures of kittens, please report them to the police.

14th JulyCoates (H) Highworth II (A) IstXI won, 2nd's lost
7th JulyBath Hospital's (A) Cherhill II (H) IstXI won, 2nd's lost

28th July: Bathford's first XI comfortably defeated Moredon Royal Oak at Bathford.
They inserted us and we totalled 184 all out in 44.5 overs. With
A. Murray bowled for 96 off pen-ultimate ball. Moredon must be sick of the sight of Northey, because he got 50 and almost won us the game in Swindon, when we only had 8 players.
Moredon totalled 140 for 7 off of 45 overs, with 3 wickets for Galer and two for Matt Watts, to round off a comfortable victory and ensure that we play 3rd Division Cricket next season.
21st July: Bathford's first XI lost to Nationwide in a competitive fixture at the Swindon based Building Societies excellent ground. We inserted Nationwide and their total of 213 for 2 was less than it might have been, after the openers put on 150 for the first wicket, in an excellent display of running and shot making. Run-out always looked the most likely Bathford wicket taker in a disciplined bowling and fielding display.
With the bat after an early cameo by Jacko it was again the Baller show, with Steven compiling an undefeated 80. When Northey was at the wicket, with Baller, a win looked possible, but the accuracy of the Nationwide bowling, the deep set field and the ever lower, slower pitch meant that we finished 30 runs short, at least securing the 175 batting point and expunging the memory of 22 all out.
Much debate about the champagne moment winner, with a run-out classic featuring Ollie and Baller, being narrowly defeated by the high quality tea.
We were lucky to get a game in mainly dry conditions in Swindon, because the mid morning monsoon had rendered the Bathford pitch unplayable, with the slope resembling a waterfall, and had done for the seconds fixture.
14th July: Bathford's first XI beat a very sociable but numerically depleted Coates, at Bathford, whilst a ten man second team had a fruitless journey to Highworth.
Bathford Ist's batted first and their total of 216 always looked enough. Again after an early cameo by Jacko it was the Juice and Baller show, with another century stand and a personal century for Baller, who was out for 110 of the last ball of the innings.
Coates were then bowled out for 87, with promising Bathford youngster Adam Fergusson taking 2 for 0 on his first team debut.
The second XI found a good pitch at Highworth, but despite big sixes from Alex and Stan, still managed to come second.
7th July: Bathford's first XI comfortably defeated a weakened Bath Hospitals team at Combe Down
Bathford's opening attack failed to take advantage of a damp pitch, with an out of sorts Darrel Watts, being particularly harshily treated by the technically interesting 'Hospital's' opener Eric Hawes. Fortunately the introduction of Paul Merrett & Matt Watts, restored sanity and Matt's 7 for 25 was his best bowling for Bathford.
Bathford's reply started poorly, when we were reduced to 11 for 3, but an unbeaten stand of 120 in 30 overs, between Bathford greats Baller, and Vowler led us to victory.
Baller showing a welcome return to form with 91*.
Bath Hospitals 131 all out, Bathford 134 for 3.
The II's again failed to function as a batting line up and were well beaten at Cherhill.

30th June: Bathford's first XI lost to Collingbourne, at Bathford, whilst the second team repeated the feat at Collingbourne.
Bathford batted first and their total of 186 looked competitive, against a bowling which never really found its length and line. It was a similar story when Collingbourne batted, and after they got off to a 'flier' they always looked the more likely winners, Collingbourne eventually winning with 4 wickets and 3 overs to spare.
The second XI found that there is no where to hide as a bowling attack at Collingbourne, and conceded well over 200, Collingbourne II's then put the field back right from the start, and left us with little to bat for.

23rd June:
* A new entrant to Bathford CC's myths and legends
The first XI was indebted to life member and club president
Stan Cherry for umpiring against Dauntsey. Stan was available to umpire because he had been dropped by the Second XI skipper for non-payment of annual subscription!
So Stan despite being a life member of the Club, a playing member since 1972, and club president, we say to you 'no pay, no play'. We now worry about the position of 2nd XI opener, club founder and life member, Mike Noel, who we confidently predict has also not paid his annual subscription since being awarded life membership of the club.

Bathford's first XI won a close encounter with Dauntsey.
We won the toss and batted, and despite most players getting into double figures we never had much of a stand develop and were indebted to the lower order of Paul Smith, Ollie, Galer and Jim Burn to get us to a total of 139 all out.
It looked an inadequate total on a goodish pitch with a hint of uneven bounce, and quick outfield.
Dauntsey's innings was very similar to Bathford's, with wickets falling steadily. Whilst Dix & skipper Barnicoat were at the wicket a Dauntsey win looked inevitable, but after they were out the innings tailed away and ended at 112 all out.
Bathford were indebted to 'Champage moment' winner Jacko, Jim and Baller for some outstanding catching
Bathford I 139 all out, Dauntsey 113 all out
The second XI result is not known (by me) at present, so watch this space for further details.

16th June: Bathford's first XI won a close encounter with Seagry, in testing conditions at Bathford. The large outfield and wet wicket restricted scoring, whilst the wet ball and slowness of the wicket meant that wicket taking was never easy.
Seagry batted first, in the worst of the conditions, and their total of 114 all out in the 43 rd over was a reasonable effort in the conditions. Baller and Galer, both finished with 4 wickets, in a disciplined bowling display.
In better weather Bathford always looked to have the total in hand, but a late flurry of wickets and the impending threat of rain, meant that with 9 wickets down it was left to Ollie Clark to strike the winning runs, with a great straight hit down the ground. There were useful contributions with the bat from Baller, Mezzer, Jacko and Jim Burn, but it was a classic cameo from Alex Bowater that probably won us the game.
Seagry 114 all out, Bathford I 115 for 9
The second XI failed to come to terms with Warminster's very slick artificial wicket, and were well beaten by 'local knowledge'.

9th June: Bathford's first XI are beginning to closely resemble England's test team, with the batting collapse starting at about 3 wickets down.
In saturday's match against the very hospitable Wanborough, Bathford bowled first and our very own version of Shoaib Akhtar, Galer, proved that he is a champagne bowler, exciting but expensive. The Wanborough total of 177 for 8 looked eminentally gettable total on a large, fast outfield, and whilst Vowler and Mezzer, were at the wicket, there looked every possibility of a favorable result. However, as soon as they departed we collapsed with only some late shot making by Galer getting us over 3 figures.
Note for Tommo
A certain
Bathford player suggested to the Wanborough team that their bowling attack consisted of a series of trundlers, and was about as threatening as being savaged by a dead sheep.
Just to put the record straight, Bathford were then skittled by the alleged cafeteria bowlers
with D. Obber taking 5 for 20 in 10 overs.
Wanborough 177 for 8, Bathford I 122 all out,

The second XI failed to take full advantage of batting first at Bathford, with Mike Noel batting throughout, whilst wickets fell at the other end. Bradford Beehive then knocked of the runs with some overs to spare.

2nd June: An improved first XI performance in an entertaining tie against Urchfont,
Bathfords innings was based around an unlikely and scruffy 50 from makeshift opener Darrel, and useful contributions from every one else.
Urchfont are a good batting line up and for most of their innings they looked likely to win fairly comfortably before losing wickets late on to Mezzer, Galer and Matt Watts and setting up a last ball where they needed 3 to win, 2 to tie.
Champagne moment winner was Darrel, for failing to attempt to run out the Urchfont batsman off the last ball.
Bathford I 159 all out, Urchfont 159 for 7

The second XI failed to take full advantage of a good batting track at Wootton Bassett, and couldn't then contain the W' Bassett batsman, eventually losing with some overs to spare.

26th May: A some what numerically depleted first XI were narrowly beaten in a good team performance in Swindon, against Moredon RO. Bowling first, we restricted them to 139 for 6, a figure which was creditable on a very large outfield.
Pick of the bowling was stand in skipper
Northey, with 3 for 30 ish including 2 caught and bowled. With the bat we were always a little behind the required run rate, but useful contributions from Matt Watts and Adam allowed Northey to launch a final assault, before he was last out for 56, well caught at square leg of a skier in the penultimate over. Leaving us 16 runs short of victory.
Moredon RO 139 for 6, Bathford 124 all out

19th May: The first XI's good start to the season evaporated when they actually played a game.
On the plus side it was great to welcome back Martin Gale from his exile in Southdown, Matt Watts from his time in Australia/Germany and Simon Brown from the wilds of Trowbridge.
We bowled/fielded adequately on a slow seaming pitch, against a good quality batting line up.
But the batting display proved that you can't hope to succeed in a higher quality of cricket, if you don't practice.
In each of the last three seasons, a woefully under prepared Bathford first XI has played a game in May against a useful bowling attack and failed to total 50, in fact the total runs scored in those 3 fixtures is 80.
Whilst there were some poor shots played, it was mainly a case of batsman who haven't practiced failing to keep out straight deliveries from tidy, medium pace trundlers.
Nationwide House 139-7, Bathford ** all out

12th May: Both teams still undefeated, the firsts looking particularly impressive.
A great, disciplined team performance by the seconds.
All Cannings 178-7, Bathford II 180-8

5th May: A great start, both teams undefeated.
Outstanding performances for the seconds by Alex and Mike Noel.
Bathford II 148 for 5, Cherhill II 88 all out
